In class we use a combination of the Jolly Phonics songs, gestures, big books, interactive whiteboard material and workbooks to help learn the 42 sounds of the English language. The songs can be found in order of teaching below:
For 3 and 4 year olds, I would recommend Letters and Sounds Phase 1 to practise identifying the sounds used in the English language.
For 5 year olds, at this stage they can move onto Letters and Sounds Phase 2. Letters and Sounds uses a similar methodology to Jolly Phonics and is used in many British schools to help teach literacy to the youngest children.
There are many free Jolly Phonics worksheets to download from Jolly Learning here. The most useful webpage I have found which can help parents and students at home is found here. It is possible to listen to the sounds, see the gestures and practise.
The poster below shows the order in which the sounds of the English language will be taught in both upper and lower case.
